I've got an APC40 and seen more than a few guys out live using them too, but as you describe, hauling a lot of gear and plugs and parts starts to become a downside in and of itself. I did have an external soundcard and I used a Korg NanoKontrol v1 as a mixer / trigger / EFX knobs - it's really neat to be able to have such live, real-time control over the music and I think people can tell - like you said, no jog wheels makes it look more like some kind of esoteric pro mixer thing, which, really, I think a lot of awesome controllers are overall. What you've described is really similar to how I was using Ableton Live on a netbook with lots of loop clips. Doing the prep in advance seems like a necessary component, which is totally fine and I figure part of people's approach anyway (some track selections, rehearsing a mix, etc). Thanks for writing out your workflow! That really does support your idea and explain how and why it can work. Is there anyone else here running this setup? What are your thoughts on this? I feel like I've discovered something cool, and that I finally have found the perfect way to play my electronic music live. The best part is the audio interface built into Traktor S5, which means all I really need for a live show is the Traktor S5 and a laptop. Then any samples from my music that I may wish to play live (vocal chops, synth leads, one shots), I can export straight from my Logic session, and import them into a Remix Deck on Traktor and save it per song, so that all I need to do to get my samples is to browse and load the correct remix deck.įinally, with vocals, all I have to do is set Deck D to be a live input deck, and I can sing/talk through the mic, and also manipulate my vocal effects live through Traktor.įurthermore, since the Traktor S5 doesn't have any jog wheels, from an aesthetic point of view, you're less likely to get pulled over for just being a 'DJ'. If I put some strategy into my sets, I can even have the raw vocal or synth lead of another song playing over different song. Beat masher on just drums), and I can drop out vocals or anything if I want to sing them or get a guest on stage. I export all my own tracks in the NI Stem format, meaning all my tracks can be manipulated live, and I can effect just certain parts of a song (i.e. Obviously the Traktor S5 is known for being a DJ controller, but I've figured out that it works really well for playing actual live shows. Just wanted to share a little thing I discovered about the Traktor S5 that I thought would be of interest to some of the producers here.
